Chapter 10 - April 25th 2005

validate data

data validation -

batch processing - all items gathered togheter before it is run (many proggies cant run in batches)
interactive processing - programs require user input on the fly
programs must run interactively - user put in something proggie acts in response
real-time applications - interchangeable with interactive, while transaction is taking place
also called online processing, realtime, interactive
offline processing is like Batch processing

menu program - common type of interactive program

MSDOS - is like a console application, uses keyboard input
windows OS - is like a GUI based application interface, uses pointing device or mouse

single-level menu - after one level that is the ultimate purpose of program
multi-level menus - has menus in menus in menus...

start
while respon

displaymenu()
print "(1) addtion problesm"
print "(2) subtraction"
print "(3) display menu"
return()

black boxes - refrences to the modules, they are invisy to the rest of proggie

April 8th, 2k5 : Arrays

subscript is the location of information in the array

COBOL - common business orientated language

  • DIM COUNT (30) - Basic Visual Basic
  • int count [30]; - C# C++
  • int[] count = new int[30]; - Java
  • COUNT OCCURS 30 TIMES PICTURE 9999 - COBOL
  • array count [1..30] of integer; - Pascal

start

prep()

eof figureRent()

cleanUp()

return

HOW TO LOAD ARRAY::
rent[count] = rentAmt
count = count + 1

Flag is variable set to indicate if an event has occured

Two arrays set witthin ready() module these are called parallel arrays one arrays values correspond with the same relative arrays on the other oen

Arrays

A list of names or values is an Array

NAMES

  1. woodrow
  2. joe
  3. kia
  4. etc
  5. ect

Print
Names(I)
Test1(I)

The number that we use to refer to the Array is called a subscript or index. So the "I" in Names(I) is the subscript to the array. Array is a list fo variable sni compueter memroy wich have the same name but differd by #s. When an array is declared it had mult. variables allocated to it. Each variable in array is an element. Elements occupy same area in memory adjacent to other ins the array. # of elements gives size or dimensino of array when u declare it with the other variables too. Elements have same group name but each is unique and has unique subscript there fore their distance can be determined.

Communication in the 21st Century

In past decades communication was an artform of articulation and diverse vocabulary. A correspondence with some one that was well worded and grammatically correct showed the writer to be a particularily learned person. That eloquence was held in respect and regarded with more gravity than a short provincial note. Use of few words showed lack of intelligence and inability to express oneself. In previous ages, when snail mail and written forms of communication were the standard, individuals had to be very descriptive and articulate because it took time to recieve and send letters. There, however, has been a shift in the current age that is inverse to what you would expected.

Currently though communication has never been simpler. With email, instant messaging, and SMS on cell phones; communication has become a continuous stream of information for people to stay connected. With all this simplicity the English language itself has been simplified as well. A VAST array of phrases, words, and even random letters can now express feelings and emotion; instead of large expressive words. Some of the best examples are used so constantly in the instant messaging world that it becomes reflex like to respond with them. Some one tells you something humorous on AIM, IRC, or a chatroom... immediately "lol" or "hehe" shows the person that u share in their appreciation of the humor. Another slight thing that I just did was to type "u" instead of "you" and u the reader probably didnt even realize it because ur used to reading it that way. (Notice the "ur" instead of "your") Another addition to communication is the emoticon. Derived from the word "emotion", and emoticon uses a combination of colons, semicolons, paranthesis, and other characters to give people a face in this digital age where people are just avatars surfing the net.

Currently as I can remember: haha, hehe, lol, rofl, lmao, btw, g2g, brb, cuz, no (know)
